NY Daily News: Jared Lee Loughner pleads not guilty to attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords

January 24, 2011- Tucson gunman Jared Lee Loughner smiled his creepy smile during a brief Arizona court hearing Monday in which he pleaded not guilty to the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

The plea was entered for him by his counsel, federal death penalty expert Judy Clarke. Loughner did not speak.

He wore an orange jumpsuit and his hair, absent in his mad-eyed mug shot, was starting to grow back.

Cameras were not allowed in the Phoenix courtroom but a dozen reporters posted real-time updates on Twitter during the hearing.

Loughner is due back in court March 9.

Since there is so much evidence that Loughner pulled the trigger - including surveillance video and his own confessional notes - any trial is likely to focus on whether he is sane enough to be held responsible.
