Charleston Gazette: GOP's Maynard reaps Massey cash for House bid

October 22, 2010- Campaign contributors tied to Massey Energy have helped Republican congressional candidate Elliott "Spike" Maynard outraise Democratic incumbent Rep. Nick Rahall by 10-to-1 this month, according to federal campaign filings.

Roughly half the $250,000 collected by Maynard during the first 13 days of October came from sources related to the Virginia-based coal operator. Those include officials with the company, its subsidiaries and vendors as well as their family members.

Rahall attracted just $22,500 during the filing period, and more than half of that came from political action committees. He's since reported raising another $40,000 since Oct. 13.

Each candidate spent about $270,000 during the reporting period. Rahall had a $425,780 campaign balance as of Oct. 13, nearly twice as much as Maynard, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Massey Chief Executive Don Blankenship has been a major supporter of Maynard's campaign. Their longtime friendship became an issue during Maynard's unsuccessful re-election campaign for state Supreme Court in 2008. Photos surfaced showing the two sharing drinks and socializing in Monaco, at a time when Massey had appeals before Maynard's court.

Rahall and his supporters have sought to make that episode part of the House campaign.

Maynard switched party affiliation from Democrat to Republican before challenging Rahall in the 3rd Congressional District, which includes the state's southern coalfields. Rahall is seeking an 18th term.
