FBI Announces Examination Of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp For Illegal Hacking Of Americans’ Phones, Including 9/11 Victims ProtectOurElections.org  Urged Probe Under The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Earlier This Week

Group Now Asks For Investigation To Include Million Dollar Payments To Weaken FCPA

Washington, DC – ProtectOurElections.org  welcomed the announcement today that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is opening a criminal examination of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp for hacking into the phones of United States citizens, including victims of the 9/11 terror attack.  The group urged the FBI to take action in response to the other serious allegations lodged against News Corps in the United States.

On Monday, the advocacy group ProtectOurElections.org sent a letter to the FBI and SEC requesting parallel criminal and civil investigations of News Corp under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act because of its “industrial scale” use of bribes as a business practice in the United Kingdom. Following the release of that letter, members of Congress in both Houses and on both sides of the political aisle called for congressional, FBI and SEC investigations of News Corp. Those members include Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Representatives Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Bruce Braley (D-IA),  and Peter King (R-NY) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR).

“The FBI is moving in the right direction,” ProtectOurElections attorney and spokesman Kevin Zeese.  “We will continue our calls for federal agencies to investigate and also seize News Corp documents as quickly as possible so more evidence is not destroyed.“

In light of The Guardian’s report that News Corp paid the Chamber of Commerce a million dollars to lobby for a weakening of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and gave another million and a quarter to the Republican Governors Association, ProtectOurElections.org is calling for the FBI to investigate whether those payments amounted to a scheme to cover up bribes that had already been paid in the UK.  The question is, at the time those payments were made, whether News Corp knew that it had delivered bribes and was facing prosecution in the US if those bribes became public.

“If these payments were in fact protection money to cover up criminal activity, then News Corp could potentially be investigated for obstruction of justice in the United States,” Zeese said.

“In short, we call on the FBI to leave no stone unturned.”
