Post-Election Monitoring Tasks
Scheduling
Contact your county election official for the schedule and location, so you may observe these the post-election monitoring tasks, including the reconciliation of the provisionals, absentees, and audits. See directory to election officialsMost counties will begin these post-election tasks on November 9th until they finish, which may be well before the 12/5 deadline.
All counties have 28 days (until 12/5) to finish the official canvass and certify the votes, but they may finish before then.
Official Canvass: Watch It!
This is an opportunity to observe the reconcillation of how many votes were cast in the various categories (e.g., unvoted, spoiled, provisional, absentee) to be certain the total up to the number of ballots cast, as well as to look for any anomalies.
There are many parts of the canvass that you may wish to view:
- Ballot remake
- Roster reconcilliation
- Withhelds
- Write-ins
- Provisional
- AV ballots (absentee)
The Manual Audit: Watch It!
(Note some counties have voluntarily increased the percentage of ballots they will audit)
Generally, the random selection per EC 15360 begins the day after the election. For details on what observe, see Michelle Gabriel’s of Alameda County’s superb checklist on observaton post-election tasks
